The True Purpose of Out-of-Body Experiences (OBEs)

The first and most important question to ask yourself is:Why do I want to have an out-of-body experience?
To find proof that consciousness exists beyond the physical body—and therefore, that there is life after death? That’s a valid and honorable quest.
To reconnect with departed loved ones? Completely understandable.
For spiritual growth? That’s a noble goal.
But wanting to analyze the subtle environment, meet extraterrestrials, spy on your neighbor, explore other planets or Area 51… let’s be honest: most of that is a waste of time.
I’m being deliberately blunt. The more I delve into this field, the less I claim to know. And I’m not alone—many seasoned experiencers with decades and thousands of OBEs behind them say the same.
Why so much uncertainty?
Because when we’re out of body, we’re navigating extremely thought-sensitive realities. This means our own illusions, beliefs, or expectations can instantly shape the experience. The moment you think you’ve understood something, the next experience flips everything on its head.
After more than twenty years of practice, I feel—and this is my personal view—that we’re often just going in circles.
Stories we read in books or on forums are almost always influenced—consciously or not—by other accounts, popular beliefs, or past readings. In the end, there’s rarely anything truly new.
It’s time we become aware of this.
What are we really seeking?
For some people, it’s about having a special ability, a sense of control or power, something that sets them apart from others—a bit like a mystic or chosen one. This often feeds the ego.
For others, it’s about personal spiritual development—a need to reconnect with the Source, to understand their true identity. OBEs then become a tool, like prayer or meditation, but not a path in and of itself.
At the core, humans are seeking love, peace, and joy—and most hope to find that after death. So why waste time chasing ethereal matter, aliens, or hidden dimensions?
Before initiating an OBE, ask yourself:👉 “Will this intention help me grow, become a better person?”
If the answer is no, then it may just be a distraction.
Studying consciousness and its mechanisms is incredibly valuable—perhaps even essential for the future of humanity. But using this ability for trivial purposes is like buying a high-end computer just to display it on a shelf.
Stop blindly believing those who use complicated or pseudo-scientific language to present themselves as awakened beings who’ve discovered the ultimate truth.Practice. Experience. Observe for yourself.
If we have this ability, it’s not by chance. In nature—including human nature—nothing is random. Everything has purpose, balance, and meaning.
And I say this sincerely: as long as consciousness is tied to a physical body, we’ll never have full access to Truth—only glimpses of it.
So instead of trying to understand everything, let’s focus on becoming better, on raising our level of awareness in the face of Creation.
Important things to keep in mind
Each time you read a book, listen to a story, or watch a video, ask yourself:👉 “Does this help me grow? Transform me? Or does it just feed my ego or reinforce my beliefs?”
Many people are fascinated by OBE stories—and yes, they are often captivating. But the truth is, most of them are embellished. That’s not always intentional. It’s just human nature.
When we’re out of body, we experience things through the filter of our mind—our culture, education, belief systems, and worldview. Then we write it down, and that already alters it, because memory is fragile and easily distorted.
Sometimes, in the act of writing, we reinterpret the experience in a new way—just one word or phrase can start to shift the meaning. Then, if we share it publicly—on a forum or in a book—we often polish the story, even unconsciously, to make it more appealing. Especially if we’ve gained a reputation as an “expert.”
That might shock you—but it no longer shocks me. It’s simply how humans function.
So always take others’ experiences with a grain of salt—whether they’re beginners or veterans. Keep a healthy distance from everything you hear or read.Because no one—and I mean no one—truly has all the answers in this domain. We are all small in the face of something much greater than ourselves.
That’s why personal experience is essential—as long as it’s approached with humility and awareness of the many illusions involved. I highly recommend it.
But treat it as something sacred, to be used with respect and discernment.
Some trustworthy voices
This is why I recommend authors like William Buhlman and Bob Peterson (among others). They remain humble and cautious about their experiences. They’re aware of how easily the subconscious can distort things. And they encourage people to practice for themselves.
They offer tools, insights, and guidance—without placing themselves on a pedestal. To me, that’s what real expertise looks like.
To conclude
OBEs aren’t the only way to expand consciousness.Fortunately.
But if you choose to explore them, do it to grow, not to entertain your curiosity.Don’t chase knowledge—pursue transformation.
And now, the dice are in your hands.
